Building The House Of Love
The first feature-length film I ever edited, way back in 1994, was Building The House Of Love, a documentary on Christian pop singer Amy Grant as she recorded her album House Of Love. I was basically left alone to craft a story from 60+ hours of verité footage, which was a huge challenge, as I’d only cut a handful of trailers and TV spots at the time.
It was released in music stores alongside the album and is only slightly more in-depth than an EPK, but this experience was definitely where I learned how to tell a long-form story. I also saved the money from this job and moved to San Francisco, where I took a year off and got involved in the rave scene, which led to me writing Groove. The irony of a Christian rock singer helping seed the making of a movie about drugs and techno was not lost on me.
The clip below shows a recording session Grant hosted at her home in Tennessee for a song featured in the end credits of the film Maverick, starring a young (and more sane-looking) Mel Gibson, who appears alongside a who’s who of country music stars.
